Schrödinger’s Cat Just Got Real: Quantum Tech Is Changing Everything

I had heard about Schrödinger’s cat, but honestly, I had no idea what it had to do with quantum physics. Call me ignorant. 😅 My father used to tell me I had poor spatial skills… and he wasn’t wrong. But I have other virtues—though that’s another story.

This weekend, the City and Science Biennial took place in Barcelona, and the main topic was quantum physics. I set out to understand it… and my mind is blown! 🤯

🔹 What is quantum computing It’s based on superposition and quantum entanglement. Qubits aren’t just 0 or 1: they can exist in multiple states at the same time, enabling calculations that are impossible for a classical computer.

💡 To be honest, I needed an example to understand superposition: Imagine a coin spinning in the air. While it’s spinning, it’s not just heads or tails—it’s in both states at once. Only when you let it land and look at it does it “decide.” A qubit works the same way: it can be in “0” and “1” at the same time until we measure it.

🔹 Yes, but, what is it for? Benefits we can already glimpse

💊 Medicine: Quantum computers can simulate extremely complex molecules that are impossible to model with classical computers today. This means we can design drugs faster, better understand diseases, and personalize treatments at the molecular level.

Energy and materials: Quantum physics allows us to model new materials and chemical reactions with extreme precision. This can lead to more efficient batteries, more powerful solar panels, and ultra-light, strong materials, transforming the way we build and store energy.

🏭 Industry and logistics: Qubits can process millions of combinations at once. This allows us to optimize transportation routes, supply chains, and industrial processes, saving time, money, and reducing the carbon footprint.

🛡️ Security: Thanks to quantum entanglement, it’s possible to create communications that are nearly impossible to hack, a revolution in digital security and the protection of critical data.

🤖 Artificial Intelligence: Quantum computers can train more complex AI models faster. This opens the door to more accurate predictions, better medical diagnoses, and intelligent systems that learn at speeds unimaginable today.

And with qubits being able to exist in two states at once… does that mean I could be here and not here at the same time? Could I teleport? Well, that still seems far off (if possible…). But we can teleport quantum information securely, thanks to entanglement—a key technology for future communications.

🌟 Why it’s revolutionary

It’s not just about more speed: it’s about making what’s impossible today possible. Medicine, energy, AI, security… the list goes on.

📢 My reflection: Barcelona is showing that it wants to be a strategic hub in this technological revolution. I’ll share more about that in another post.
